Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) is Switzerland's national carrier and one of Europe's most respected premium airlines. Operating from its primary hub at Zurich Airport (ZRH) and secondary hub at Geneva Airport (GVA), SWISS connects over 100 destinations across Europe, North America, South America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. As a full member of Star Alliance and part of the Lufthansa Group, SWISS passengers enjoy seamless connections to over 1,300 airports worldwide with the combined network of partner airlines.
SWISS is renowned for the distinctly Swiss character of everything it does — a combination of precision, reliability, and genuine warmth that permeates every aspect of the passenger experience. The airline was the global launch customer for the revolutionary Airbus A220 aircraft (formerly the Bombardier C Series), reflecting its commitment to innovation and passenger comfort. Every SWISS flight features the signature touch: a square of genuine Swiss chocolate, a small gesture that has come to symbolise the airline's philosophy of thoughtful hospitality.
Whether you are booking a Business Class seat for a transatlantic crossing, an Economy Flex fare for a European connection, or a First Class seat on a special route, SWISS delivers a product that embodies Swiss values at every level. SWISS History – Rising From the Ashes of Swissair
The story of Swiss International Air Lines cannot be told without understanding the extraordinary legacy of Swissair — and the dramatic collapse that preceded it. Swissair was founded in 1931 and built over seven decades into one of the world's most prestigious airlines, widely nicknamed the "Flying Bank" for its exceptional financial management and uncompromising service quality. For generations, flying Swissair was synonymous with Swiss engineering, reliability, and elegance. The airline was so financially sound that it was used by other Swiss institutions as a benchmark of stability.
The collapse came swiftly and shockingly. In October 2001, Swissair was grounded due to a catastrophic liquidity crisis, leaving thousands of passengers stranded at airports around the world. The failure of the "Hunter Strategy" — an aggressive expansion into smaller European airlines — combined with the financial shock of the September 11 attacks, brought down an institution that had seemed unassailable. It was one of the most dramatic airline failures in aviation history.
From those ashes, Swiss International Air Lines was launched in March 2002, built from the remnants of Swissair and Crossair. Within three years, in 2005, SWISS was acquired by the Lufthansa Group — a move that provided financial stability while carefully preserving SWISS's distinct Swiss identity and premium positioning. Today SWISS is consistently rated among Europe's top premium carriers and has more than restored the reputation of Swiss aviation on the world stage. SWISS Business Class – The Art of Swiss Excellence
SWISS Business Class on long-haul routes is a genuine expression of Swiss excellence: meticulous attention to detail, premium materials, and a culinary programme that draws on the depth and diversity of Swiss regional cuisine. On wide-body aircraft — the Boeing 777, Airbus A340, and Airbus A330 — Business Class is configured in a fully flat herringbone layout with every seat enjoying direct aisle access. There are no middle seats requiring passengers to step over a neighbour — a critical comfort factor on overnight transatlantic and intercontinental flights.
The seat extends to a fully flat bed, and the cabin is designed for rest as much as productivity. The SWISS culinary concept is the highlight for many travellers: meals are developed by award-winning Swiss chefs using carefully selected regional ingredients from across Switzerland's diverse culinary landscape. The menu rotates to feature Alpine specialities, lake fish, artisan cheeses, and Swiss wine pairings. A genuine Lindt chocolate is placed at your seat as a welcome — a tradition that encapsulates the SWISS philosophy. On long-haul flights, the famous Cheese Trolley presents a tableside selection of Swiss artisan cheeses.
Before departure, Business Class passengers enjoy access to the SWISS Business Lounge at Zurich Airport (Terminal E), which features a full dining area, shower suites, a bar, and a quiet work area. Cellini amenity kits are provided on overnight flights. To book SWISS Business Class and experience the signature Swiss culinary concept, contact our experts at +1 (888) 457-7599.
Airbus A220 – SWISS Was First
In the history of commercial aviation, being the launch customer for a new aircraft type is a mark of both courage and vision. SWISS holds that distinction for one of the most innovative narrowbody aircraft ever built: the Airbus A220. Originally developed by Bombardier as the C Series (with the CS100 and CS300 variants), the aircraft was renamed the A220 after Airbus acquired the programme in 2018. SWISS had placed its order years earlier and became the global launch customer for the CS100 — now the A220-100 — entering commercial service on July 15, 2016.
The A220 is extraordinary for a narrowbody aircraft in several key respects. The economy seats are the widest of any narrowbody class — measuring 18.6 inches in width compared to 17–17.5 inches on the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 — giving passengers noticeably more personal space on shorter flights. The windows are significantly larger than those on competing narrowbodies, allowing more natural light into the cabin. The cabin altitude is pressurised to the equivalent of 6,000 feet rather than the typical 8,000 feet, reducing fatigue on longer flights. And the cabin is substantially quieter, thanks to the Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan engines.
SWISS now operates both the A220-100 and the longer A220-300, deploying them across its European network and on select medium-haul routes. The aircraft has become a passenger favourite, consistently receiving the highest comfort ratings of any narrowbody in the SWISS fleet. Miles & More – Lufthansa Group Loyalty Program
Miles & More is the Lufthansa Group's comprehensive loyalty programme and one of Europe's largest frequent flyer schemes, with over 35 million members. As a SWISS passenger, you earn Miles & More miles on every SWISS flight, as well as on flights with all other Lufthansa Group carriers: Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, and Edelweiss Air. Beyond the Lufthansa Group, miles can be earned and redeemed on all 26 member airlines of the Star Alliance network — giving members access to over 1,300 airports and thousands of routes worldwide.
Miles & More features three elite tiers above standard membership. Frequent Traveller status is awarded after accumulating a qualifying number of status miles and provides lounge access, priority boarding, and extra baggage on Lufthansa Group flights. Senator status, the next tier, adds additional lounge benefits, priority on waiting lists, and a dedicated service line. At the pinnacle sits HON Circle — one of the most exclusive elite statuses in global aviation. HON Circle is awarded to passengers who accumulate 600,000 qualifying miles in Business or First Class within a two-year period, and the benefits include access to the legendary HON Circle Lounge at Frankfurt, personal travel consultants, and the highest possible priority across the entire network.
Miles & More award redemptions cover flights on all Star Alliance carriers, hotel nights with numerous partner chains, car rentals, and retail purchases. Miles have a validity period but can be kept active with earning or redemption activity. To maximise your Miles & More earnings on a SWISS booking, call our specialists at +1 (888) 457-7599.
SWISS Routes & Zurich Hub
Zurich Airport (ZRH) is Switzerland's premier aviation gateway and the primary hub of Swiss International Air Lines. Situated in Terminal E — a purpose-built international facility — SWISS operates a highly efficient connecting bank structure that allows passengers to transit smoothly between intercontinental and intra-European flights, often with connection times as short as 45 minutes for Star Alliance partner itineraries. The airport itself is consistently rated among Europe's best for efficiency, cleanliness, and passenger experience.
SWISS's European network from ZRH and GVA is extensive, covering virtually all major business and leisure destinations across the continent. Transatlantic services to North America are a cornerstone of the SWISS long-haul network, with year-round non-stop flights to New York JFK, Chicago O'Hare, Washington Dulles, Boston Logan, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Toronto Pearson, and Miami. African routes include Johannesburg (JNB), Nairobi (NBO), Casablanca (CMN), and Accra (ACC). In Asia, SWISS serves Singapore Changi (SIN), Hong Kong (HKG), Tokyo Narita (NRT), and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK), as well as Mumbai (BOM) and Delhi (DEL) on the Indian subcontinent. Middle East connections include Dubai (DXB) and Doha (DOH).
The quality of connections through ZRH is one of SWISS's strongest competitive advantages — passengers flying intercontinental itineraries through Zurich benefit from short, stress-free transfers in one of Europe's most functional hub airports. To book a SWISS connection through Zurich or a direct flight to any of these destinations, call our team at +1 (888) 457-7599 — available 24/7 with no hold time.
